What To Tip Your Movers

How Much To Tip Your Movers

Movers are arguably the hardest workers in the service industry. And unlike other service industry jobs, movers are dealing with your personal possessions, some which hold extreme personal and monetary value. Is it mandatory to tip your movers, the answer is no. Is it socially acceptable behavior, especially in cases when the moving job was of quality and in an efficient manner, the answer is yes. Below are tips on how much you should tip your movers.

Different types and lengths of moves call for a variation in the amount you will tip.

  • Let’s say it takes the movers 4 hours to pack, load and unload your possessions with no issues or damages. A $10-$20 tip for each mover will suffice.
  • Now lets assume the same above move takes at least 8 hours, a $20-$30 tip for each mover would be a fair exchange.
  • There are other factors that could empower you to give an even greater tip such as heavy furniture, specialty items such as pool tables, safes, etc., stairs or any other obstacles that make the moving process harder than it already is.

Note: Tips don’t always have to be monetary. Providing lunch or dinner depending on the time of day will also be appreciated. Making sure your movers are comfortable by providing water {especially in the summer} or some hot tea or cocoa for the winter is simply common decency.

With all that said, if your movers have bad attitudes, are not working efficiently or have caused some damage to your items, feel free to not tip at all as it wouldn’t merit the job that was done. Make sure that no extra charges arise before tipping. And also tip each mover individually bypassing whoever is in charge. If you have encountered a good moving crew, the above information should help you out when it comes time to tip your movers.
